Kenya officially abolished visa and pre-entry approval for Nigerian passport holders, a bold step towards promoting African travel integration and simplifying cross-border travel.
Nigerian tourists are now free to travel visa-free and without an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) for a stay not exceeding 60 days, as per a new policy guideline by the Kenyan Cabinet. This is part of a broader effort by Kenya to liberalise travel for African citizens and boost tourism, business, and cultural exchange.
What’s New for Nigerian Travelers?
Kenya’s new travel policy simplifies the entry process for Nigerians in a number of significant ways:
• No Visa or eTA Required: Nigerian passport holders are no longer required to obtain a visa or an eTA before traveling. You simply arrive and get cleared at the border.
•Stay for Up to 60 Days: Eligible travelers can remain in Kenya for up to two months visa-free, perfect for tourism, family visits, or business exploration.
•Even Better for EAC Citizens: Nationals from East African Community countries including Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan, and Burundi can enjoy visa-free stays for up to six months, in line with regional agreements.
What You’ll Need to Enter Kenya
Though the entry process has been simplified, travelers should be ready to provide:
•A valid Nigerian international passport with a minimum of six months’ validity from the date of arrival.
•Proof of onward or return journey, and residence proof, may be demanded at the port of entry.
There’s no online application, no hidden eTA fee, and no paperwork to complete in advance. Just pack your bags, show your passport, and go!
A Win for African Mobility
This policy update comes after widespread criticism of Kenya’s 2024 eTA rollout, which many saw as a disguised visa requirement. The new approach signals a welcome shift toward open borders within Africa, encouraging greater intra-African tourism and economic collaboration.
For Nigerian tourists, it’s now simpler than ever before to visit Kenya’s renowned wildlife, heritage, and rapidly expanding cities visa-free and hassle-free.
